The International SeminarChronology Problematic of Egyptian Cinema
and the Identity Question

The verification of the cinematic Egyptian heritage is unquestionable, it is an essential target. As learning more about the path of Egyptian Cinema, paves the way of its grasping and moves its adaptation to a higher level - focusing on the sort of knowledge we seek out of any art - is namely the theoretical perception of the events concerning this art, and the efficient and effective factors leading its development and growth. However, the disparity may originate because of the way or the method, which evaluates and contains the trend of this legacy.
At the beginning we would like to assure that the case of the Egyptian Cinema Chronology is not that easy mission, as it is hard to announce definite judgments around this process, as a result of interlacement complicated factors affected the birth and the development deeply. It is nearly impossible having scientific Historiography concerning this history, without taking care of these factors.
Lately a disputation was enkindled among the cultural cream figures, who are interested in such a cinematic matter called "Crisis of Centenary", at the same moment our ministry of culture announced its decision to celebrate the hundred anniversary of Egyptian cinema, recommended by Committee of Cinema at the High Supreme Council in Egypt. Regarding the fact that first Egyptian film was shot in 1907 by the foreigner Amberno Doris, who was resident in Egypt, on the other hand some documents emphasize that first film was shot by the French Lagrene, who filmed Actuality Films (News Reel) carrying the title "Streets of Alexandria" in 1905. It is widely-known that this is the second centenary celebration followed the 1996 one, considering that the first screening in Egypt occurred in 1896 at Zawani Cafe, despite the fact that the film was foreign, and none of the Egyptians saw it.
